NaNoWriMoMo - A Little Mo Goes a Long Way

Well, friends, we're approaching the midpoint of NaNoWriMo. And whether your words are pouring forth like refreshing, crystal clear water over the smooth riverbed or you've overturned your raft in the raging rapids, there's no turning back now. I mean, you're almost HALF-WAY through this most wonderful, most magic, most frustrating, most stressssssful month of the year.

Don't stop now.

Keep moving forward. 50k is in sight.

So, to provide a little mid-month humor and some NaNoWriMoMo (National Novel Writing Month Motivation), I went back to my Facebook status updates from November of last year when I was knee-deep in the NaNo River myself. I found that posting updates  on Facebook accomplished a couple of things for me - it held me accountable because I knew that at least some of my friends were interested in my progress and I got some much needed encouragement in their comments.

If you don't want to go public on Facebook or Twitter with your daily updates, jot down a sentence or two each day after you've reached your goal. This book that you're writing could change the world - wouldn't it be fun to go back some day and experience the thrill and agony of the month that started it all?

October 31, 2012
One more night of Halloween festivities - as much as I love spooky and creepy stuff, I'm ready for it to be OVER. I've got a novel to write, people!

November 1, 2012 - 5:21 am
Good start to the day - got up at 4:15 and knocked out 1400 words in an hour. Wish I could stay home to write.

November 1, 2012 - 5:36 am
I just entertained my children by lip syncing to Bonnie Tyler's "I Need A Hero." Toad threw his socks at me.

This story wants to be told. Day One: 5,076 words on a daily goal of 1,851 and I have a fairly good idea where it's going.

November 2, 2012
"Questions of science, science and progress." Today's word count: 7063.

November 3, 2012
My work here is done. Up to 9053 words. Now to leave the kids with Grandma and Grandpa and spend the day with my wonderful husband.

November 3, 2012
Brilliant. Hammer Guy (that's my husband) is brilliant.

November 4, 2012
Hit 11,003 words on the drive home from Wisconsin. Still ahead of schedule, which is good because we have a cray-cray week ahead.

November 5, 2012
Gratitude 5: Our lovely 5-year-old with her first loose tooth; 5 extra minutes this morning to jot down a bit of dialogue; only 5 days until the weekend; Star Wars, Episode 5; 5 cups of coffee in my near future.

November 5, 2012
I know that you are all thinking about the election tomorrow, but may I remind you that there are people out there writing novels. 13,261 words. Pow. And don't forget to vote.

November 6, 2012
Long day. Great turnout, city of Hanover! Wrote about 75 words by hand in a notebook during the 15 minutes we had a "lull." Think I'll take tonight off. (I serve as an election judge for my city.)

November 9, 2012
Word count update: 15,744. Already a ton of plot holes, but that's what makes it fun! Just gotta keep moving forward.

November 10, 2012
Today was an amazing writing day. Wrote 7k and brought my total word count to 22,711. On track to hit 25k by tomorrow night. People, this is going to be GOOD.

November 11, 2012
Busy, fun weekend. Still have a few loads of laundry to do and a few thousand words to write.

November 11, 2012
I'm so tired I've been typing with my eyes closed, but I made it. 25,022 words. Halfway there!

November 12, 2012
Ugh, what a Monday. Struggled to get my word count in tonight for the first time. 26,882.

November 13, 2012
It's hard to concentrate on writing when That Metal Show is on. #amwriting

November 15, 2012
“This is how you do it: you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it's done. It's that easy, and that hard.”― Neil Gaiman. After a sluggish couple of days, tonight I hit 31,009 words.

November 16, 2012
This is going to be one of THOSE days, isn't it?

November 18, 2012
I just cleared 37k -- 3k to go for me to make my weekend goal. Think I can wrap this up by Thanksgiving night?

November 18, 2012
Two, two sick kiddos - ah ha, ha, ha. Is it bedtime yet?

November 18, 2012
Birdy is now playing doctor. She just diagnosed me with a bad quesadilla.

November 18, 2012
40,298 words. I met my weekend goal, it's going to be a beautiful book (someday), and I'm going to bed.

November 19, 2012
Quote of the day (so far) from Toad: "The Grinch would look better with some pants on." Another sick day at home with both kids. We're breaking out the Christmas movies.

November 19, 2012
Quote #2 from Toad: So, what, is Santa immortal or something? (Watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.)

November 22, 2012
Today I hit 50,004 words, but I'm not finished telling this story.

November 23, 2012
54,334 words. My manuscript has more plot holes than Minnesota has lakes, but I think I'm close enough to call this draft done. Can't wait to start revising!

November 24, 2012
Question of the night from Birdy: Why do some Muppets wear clothes and some don't?

November 25, 2012 via Twitter
30 miles to coffee. #amwriting on the River Road.

I guess I still have more story to tell. Up to 58,810 words and five more days of November to start filling in some of those plot holes.

November 27, 2012
Doing homework with Toad. Me: "What's a synonym for challenging?"
Toad: "I don't know. This is hard."

November 27, 2012 via Twitter

November 30, 2012 via Twitter
I bought myself a little something for finishing #NaNoWriMo: the 1948 Oneida Mansion House spoon ring from my ms.

NaNoWriMo Reward

NaNoWriMo Reward

This is a ring that is given to my main character in BEAUTIFUL BIRD, SING ON, my reward for finishing that first draft. I've worn it every day since then to remind myself of how hard I worked, of how much potential this manuscript has, and how I really, really need to get going on revisions (a year later).

You will get there, too. You will reach those final days when you validate your novel and you will cheer - for yourself and for others who have ridden the rapids of NaNoWriMo.

Keep moving forward. Finish the book and buy yourself a little something.

So - how's it going? Share your NaNo status update in the comments!
