For our final crew member interview, Annabelle, our ship’s kraken, will be interviewing the fierce (and very brave) Brunhilde the Black-Hearted, also known as Rachel Searles. Unlike most kraken (who just want to eat pirates), Annabelle is seeking to mend the tattered pirate-kraken relations. She didn't have a bio photo, but we were able to snap this pic of her tentacles (she can move really, really fast when she wants to).
First, a little about Rachel:
Rachel Searles grew up in a small town called Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After getting a degree in political science, she spent a few years abroad in Munich and Istanbul, working as a cook, a secretary, a teacher, and a reporter for the Turkish Daily News. Eventually she was lured back to the States to study journalism in California, where she still lives. She has been devouring books for as long as she can remember, and writing since the first grade when she discovered that making up stories was just as fun as reading them. She writes both MG and YA, and her debut, THE LOST PLANET, is an upper MG space adventure coming from Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan in January 2014. She is represented by Joanna Volpe of New Leaf Literary.
Okay, Annabelle. Come on board!
*peeks over railing*
*climbs on board*
*slinks into interview room*
WE APOLOGISSSSSSE. OUR TENTACLESSSSS STICKSSSSS TO THE SHIP.
WHAT ISSSSSSS YOUR NAME, PIRATE?
Brunhilde is a nod to my German heritage, and the name itself means "ready for battle." I picked it because I am always up for a challenge! The Black-Hearted part...well, that refers to my ruthless ability to kill off characters and shed nary a tear...
WE LIKESSSSSS BATTLE. AND KILLING TOO.
*eyes Brunhilde speculatively*
WE EATSSSSS PIRATESSSSS YOU KNOW.
WE WANTSSSS ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE YOU, PIRATE.
Mellow. It takes a lot to ruffle my feathers.
FEATHERSSSSSS? WE EATS BIRDSSSSSS TOO.
WE WANTS TO KNOW YOUR FAVORITE BOOKSSSSSS, PIRATE.
Stephen King is a big one--I lived and breathed his books all through high school. Other authors I love include Nicole Krauss, Justin Cronin, Laini Taylor, and Maggie Stiefvater. DAYS OF BLOOD & STARLIGHT and THE SCORPIO RACES are two of my most favorite YA reads. THE DROWNED CITIES by Paolo Bacigalupi was also incredible. And right now I'm working my way through George R. R. Martin's Fire and Ice series, and whoa. The worldbuilding! The characters! The complex plotting! I'm in love.
OH, YESSSSSSS. WE LOVES BOOKS WITH FIGHTING. AND BLOOD.
SSSSSSSO PIRATE, IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON AN ISLAND, WHAT WOULD YOU ASK FOR?
My e-reader, my laptop (I'm assuming this deserted island has wi-fi, right?), and a lifetime supply of eggplant.
YOU ARE ODD, PIRATE. WE WOULD WANTS FISHHHHHH. AND BIRDSSSSSS. AND RATSSSSSSS. DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR … ANIMAL FRIENDSSSSS ARE?
*looks around room hopefully*
WELL, PIRATE. WE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT PART OF THE SSSSSITE YOU ARE MOST EXCITED ABOUT.
Word Sprints, because I've never done them before and the social, encouraging aspect sounds like loads of fun. Also because I have a deadline coming up!
TELL USSSSS, WHAT ISSSSSSSS SOMETHING FUN ABOUT YOU?
When I was in 8th grade I wrote a letter to Lloyd Alexander and he wrote me back! The letter is somewhere in my parents' house--I definitely need to find and frame it. I read all his books over and over when I was a girl.
VERY IMPRESSIVE, PIRATE. YOU WOULD BE A CHALLENGING ADVERSARY FOR USSSSS.
WE MUSTS KNOW, DO YOU HAVE PETSSSSS?
I do! Two cats: Simon, a black shorthair who is way too smart for his own good and thus suffers from anxiety (no joke, we have to give him Prozac), and Jack, a gray-and-black tabby we took in as a five-week-old stray when our neighbor's dogs chased him up inside my car. He was so tiny! Now he is snuggly and gregarious and terrified of loud noises, unexpected petting, and ceiling fans. They are my writing buddies and battle my laptop on a daily basis for lap space.
OHHHH. WE LIKE PETSSSSS, PIRATE. WE LIKES TO EATS PETSSSSS. MOST ESPECIALLY CATSSSSS.
WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TOLD YOU THAT.
DON’T WORRY, PIRATE. WE EATSSSS FISHHHHHH MORE THAN CATSSS. DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING ELSE TO SSSSSSSAY, PIRATE?
I'm so very excited to be here with these incredible lady buccaneers! And since I'm the last one to be interviewed: Let the wild rumpus start!!
Our launch giveaway closes tonight, so if you want a chance to win one of two pirate-themed prize packs be sure to log your entries. Thanks for reading!
