If you’ve never joined us for Walk the Plank before, here’s what it’s all about. Use the following prompt to write a short piece of flash fiction. Be as daring as you like, try a new writing style, or use a favorite character—just get those words down! Try to keep your piece 200 words or less, using the following opening line:
“Standing at the front of the class on the first day of school...”
Here's and example:
Standing at the front of the class on the first day of school, I'm supposed to sum up my Summer break. This is a laugh. Everyone knows what I did on my Summer break. It was in all the papers. It was on the news. It must have been a slow news day. Or rather a slow news Summer. The reporters camped out on my parent's front lawn only packed up and left a week before school started. Leaving their discarded coffee cups and fast food wrappers, which I had to clean up in a big, black plastic trash bag. Thankfully not on camera. For once. I was spared that one humiliation. Too bad I wasn't spared the other bazillion humiliations that have been my life for the last two and a half months. But quick, everybody wake up, and pay attention, crazy girl is about to break her vow of silence and actually say something this time. Because I'm supposed to sum up my Summer. And then I have to see all of these people every single day. For the next 179 days. It was going to be a shitty year.
If you are really up for a challenge, make sure you use the opening line in your piece. And if you make your entry exactly 200 words, you’re a genius! What’s the incentive? Prizes, of course!
