Meet new crew member Stephanie Scott (a.k.a. Boatswain Jayne)

How's it be, fellow Swashbuckler's! I'm happy to say that things here have been grrrrrrrrrrrreat -- especially since a new crew member be joining the ship and by golly am I excited for this one! Not only has this pirate been a long time supporter o' the Buccaneers, but she also be a fellow 2016 debut YA author with me! So, without further adieu, please meet Stephanie Scott, a.k.a. Boatswain Jayne!

A little about Stephanie:

Hailing from the land of the Great Lakes in a town called Kalamazoo where there are no zoos, Stephanie took up the quill to pen stories of adventurous lasses n’ lads. She sets her trade routes through Romance Writers of America and YARWA (say it like a pirate!) and helps writers prepare to walk the query plank in online pitch contests. She calls Sarah LaPolla from Bradford Lit her first mate, and her debut ALTERATIONS about a fashion-obsessed loner who reinvents herself will drop anchor in 2016 by Bloomsbury Spark.

Hook: Welcome aboard this fine ship o' ours, we're glad to have you! And so the fine lads and ladies o' the internet can get to know ye a bit better, why don't ye tell us all a little more about you?

Like many writers, I've pretty much always wanted to write a book. But for a long time I didn't know where to start. It's so hard to know how to take those first few steps. I've been writing fiction for about 5 years. I love developing stories, and working with writers. I grew up in a house that loved books and reading so I've been reading all my life. My family is very encouraging of creative arts, as well as my husband who is a musician, artist and all-around creative guy.

Hook: Well we're sure glad you figured out where to start and we can't wait to get our hands on that debut of yours this year! But question...why Boatswain Jayne? Maybe you can tell us a little about how you came up with such a fine pirate name?

Boatswain Jayne: My middle name is Jayne, and put together with Boatswain, it has a nice piratey ring to it. The Boatswain oversees the deck crew and supervises and performs maintenance on the ship’s deck and the anchor. In true boatswain form, I delegated this task to my first mate (husband) who excitedly searched online for ‘duties on a pirate ship.’

Hook: Oversees the deck crew? Ha! Shall I introduce you to myself? Captain E. Hook? And don't forget the one I just warned you about, The Dread Pirate B.? You must be new here, so I'll let you off with a warning...this time! And perhaps B. and I might allow you to perform "maintenance" on this fine ship of ours. But fair warning: you'll have to fight Jas Ketch on that anchor, just sayin'. She's a feisty one that Jas Ketch -- and speaking of feisty, what's one word that sums you up?

Boatswain Jayne: Loyal

Hook: Loyal? Now there's a pirate after me own hook! I mean heart! But now for the real test: you're about to set sail on a year long adventure and you can only bring 5 of your favorite reads with you. Quick -- what authors would be stashed in your pack?

Boatswain Jayne: For YA, I love Libba Bray, Nova Ren Suma, Jenny Han, Morgan Matson. Being in Romance Writers, I’ve found some great favorites: Kristan Higgins, Sonali Dev, Molly O’Keefe, Darynda Jones. I also love books by funny women: Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Felicia Day. I also like historical fiction. One of my favorite books from last year was The Royal We by fashion bloggers the Fug Girls Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan.

Hook: I can see five means something totally different to you, but I'll let it slide, because you named some fine women there! Oh billowing sails! Looks like you're still learning how to *maintain* this ship o' ours because it's sprung a leak! Good thing I see a deserted island not too far away (good luck getting all those above mentioned books there with you!) -- tell me, what THREE (yes, only three this time!) things are a must have while you're there?

Boatswain Jayne: Lou Malnati’s pizza (Chicago’s best), high-end soap products like Philosophy bath wash, and Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens (who crash on a deserted island), because that would be pretty meta.

Hook: Look at ye being all meta. Heh. You're going to fit in well here, I can just tell. Plus pizza and soap products? Yeah, we might just keep ye around. But first: ye need to share what you're looking forward to the most, now that ye be a Buccaneer?

Boatswain Jayne: I’m excited for the writing boot camps, which have helped my productivity tremendously over the years, and for more Instagram photo challenges because I love the book community on IG.

Hook: The IG book community is pretty spectacular isn't it? We'll be happy to have ye throw out some photo challenges to the land lubbers of the world! And we can't wait to see your picture skillz...yes, that's a z there, what's it to ye? Perhaps you'd like to tell us about some other skillz of yours (and yes, I did it again!)?

Boatswain Jayne: I sang in a gospel choir in college for two years. I did NOT take on any solos. (I blend.)

Hook: HA! "I blend". I love it!!!! I cannot carry a tune to save my life...good thing I've got this hook, huh? Think fast, which Hogwarts House are ye sorted into?

Boatswain Jayne: Ravenclaw!

Hook: Well me be sorted into Gryffindor, so I guess we can still be friends. But had you been a Slytherin, well...I'd have to show ye that lovely 'ole plank we've got over there. Anywhoodle. It's been great getting to know ye -- any last words you'd like to share?

Boatswain Jayne: I was there, watching from the docks, when the YA Buccaneers first set sail. The writing boot camps have helped me so much over the years. I’ve had people ask me, how are you so disciplined with your writing? When you check in with a group of writers consistently, along with goalsetting and a timeline, this makes a huge difference. Writing can be isolating. I love the community within the YA Buccaneers and am so glad to be a part of it.

Hook: We love that you've been with us from the beginning -- hard to believe it's been almost 3 years since we set sail! One thing's for sure, after all those days at sea, plenty of our crew could use some of those fine high-end soap products you mentioned earlier...I won't call them out by name *jynx* as that wouldn't be nice *leonardo*.

All joking aside, it really is great having you on board, Steph -- and I'm so glad you decided to join us! As well, I can't wait to celebrate our debuts...we've got a crazy year ahead of us!
